Hucknall businessman turned racing driver, Carl Cavers, clinched the 2022 Porsche Visit Cayman Islands Sprint Challenge GB Am category championship title last weekend.

At his home circuit, Donington Park, in front of friends and family, Carl recorded an impressive hat-trick of victories to take the title in commanding fashion.

Speaking exclusively to Hucknall Nub News, Mr Cavers said: "Obviously I'm over the moon with that. We got off to a really good start at the beginning of the season and throughout the season it's been a bit nip and tuck. I've led all the way through after each round but it's got tighter and tighter so when we came into this weekend I was only leading the championship by two points so it was kind of essential I had a good weekend and luckily I did. It feels great to win the championship without a doubt."

Mr Cavers believes heading into the weekend holding a slender lead over season long rival Rupert Laslett, helped him to attack the weekend like it was any other without the thought of defending his points lead.

He said: "We were just on it, just absolutely focused and made sure we led the way, pole position, fastest laps we were just after everything and that's exactly what we did. Being two points in front, probably in some ways was better than being six or seven. You can still lose it at that but it's so close it does focus the mind."

The first step towards the title was taking two pole positions in qualifying. This saw him line up just behind the professional category drivers and a good start allowed him to shadow them in the early stages of the opening race.

Doing this allowed him to pull a big gap over his category rivals including Laslett who fought his way up to second. In the closing stages Cavers controlled the gap and concentrated on bringing the car home for a routine win.

In the early stages of the second race, it looked like Cavers would drive an identical race to the first but a massive moment at Redgate on some fluid dropped by another driver almost ended his race.

"Two Pros had collided at Goddards. One of them had bust a radiator and they were dripping fluid all the way down the pit straight. As I came into the braking zone it was all over and honestly, I've never put so much opposite lock into the car. We managed to recover it."

This drama put Laslett and Timothy Creswick right on his bumper. However, just as he thought he was in for a long battle Laslett and Creswick collided ending Laslett's race and allowing Cavers to ease to victory and clinch the title.

The final race of the season saw Cavers run at a similar pace to the leaders and finish ahead of one of the professional drivers as he crossed the line sixth overall.

Asked about his team, Valluga, Mr Cavers added: "They've been going a few years. They've now won this championship twice on the bounce, so they obviously know the Porsche setup brilliantly, that certainly helped us throughout the year.

"This year I was just hoping to be fighting for the podium every week so to walk away from the championship with nine wins from 15, and four seconds, it's been pretty special."
