Hucknall MP Mark Spencer has denied allegations that he told a minister she was fired from her position because of her faith.

According to the Sunday Times, Conservative MP Nusrat Ghani said that when she asked for an explanation as to why she was being removed from her position as a transport minister it was stated her "Muslimness was raised as an issue".

Whilst making the allegations, Ms Ghani did not name any individuals, however Mr Spencer, who as well as being the MP for the constituency of Sherwood is also the Government Chief Whip, identified himself as the person to whom Ms Ghani was referring. He then went on to deny the claims.

Taking to Twitter, Mr Spencer wrote: "To ensure other Whips are not drawn into this matter, I am identifying myself as the person Nusrat Ghani MP has made claims about this evening.

"These accusations are completely false and I consider them to be defamatory. I have never used those words attributed to me.

"It is disappointing that when this issue was raised before Ms Ghani declined to refer the matter to the Conservative Party for a formal investigation.

"I provided evidence to the Singh Investigation into Islamophobia which concluded that there was no credible basis for the claims.

"These claims relate to a meeting in March 2020. When Ms Ghani raised them she was invited to use the formal CCHQ complaints procedure. She declined to do so."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has now ordered a Cabinet Office inquiry into the claims.

This follows a difficult couple of weeks for Mr Spencer whose unwavering defence of the Prime Minister in the wake of the partygate scandal in Downing Street drew heavy criticism from a number of his constituents on social media.

His government department was then named in blackmailing allegations by Tory MP William Wragg.

Hucknalll Nub News has contacted Mr Spencer for comment on the allegations.
