A Hucknall Town fan suffered a serious eye injury when he was punched at the end of this week's match at Clifton All Whites, in Nottingham.

Police have confirmed they are investigating an incident in which a 54-year-old man needed hospital treatment after the final whistle of the Nottinghamshire Senior Cup tie on Tuesday night.

It's understood the referee showed one of the Clifton players a red card after the incident.

It's believed the fan who suffered the injury was standing behind the goal being defended by the All Whites' goalkeeper, at the Norman Archer Memorial Ground on Green Lane, Clifton.

Police were called to the ground as the fan was being given medical treatment. The fan - understood to be the father of a Hucknall Town player - was later taken to hospital.

A Nottinghamshire Police spokesperson said: "We treat reports of assault seriously and our enquiries are ongoing."
