Boris Johnson will announce his resignation as Conservative Party leader later today.

He will remain as Prime Minister until a leadership contest takes place to find his successor; this is expected to be in the autumn.

Mr Johnson's resignation comes in the wake of the Chris Pincher affair. The Downing Street Office of the Prime Minister denied the level of knowledge Mr Johnson had about the past record of the shamed Tamworth MP, who has admitted groping men and unacceptable conduct in Parliament while drunk, before appointing him to a position in the Conservative Whips' office.

Over 50 ministers and Parliamentary private secretaries have quit their posts since Tuesday.

Locally, there had already been calls for the Prime Minister to step aside.

Ashfield Independent Councillor Lee Waters who represents Hucknall South on Nottinghamshire County Council and Hucknall North on Ashfield District Council thought that Mr Johnson's time in number 10 was almost up on Tuesday (5 July) and called for Hucknall's MP Mark Spencer to comment on the situation.

Mr Spencer, a staunch Boris Johnson supporter, did not elect to vacate his position as Leader of the House of Commons and has so far yet to issue a public comment. He has been approached for comment by Hucknall Nub News.

However, Lee Anderson, Conservative MP for Ashfield, the neighbouring constituency to Sherwood, which contains Hucknall, who had previously been a Boris Johnson loyalist, withdrew his support of the Prime Minister yesterday (Wednesday 6 July). He stated that "integrity should always come first and sadly this has not been the case over the past few days."

The Prime Minister is expected to make a public statement shortly.
