The Arc Cinema in Hucknall will be showing a Ukrainian film next week and donating the money raised from ticket sales to charity to help the people of the war-torn nation.

The cinema will be screening 'Olga' next Wednesday (30 March). All proceeds will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee which has been helping the people of Ukraine since the country was invaded by Russia last month.

'Olga' tells the story of a 15-year-old Ukrainian gymnast, training for the European Championship in preparation for the Olympics, who is forced to move to Switzerland from her home in Kyiv where her mother works as an investigative journalist reporting on the Euromaidan protests.

The film stars former Ukrainian national gymnast Anastasia Budiashkina who herself arrived in Poland on Monday after leaving Kharkiv in Ukraine to escape the war.

Speaking exclusively to Hucknall Nub News, cinema manager Mark Gallagher, said: "I was inspired by Damo and The Red Lion Pub and what they did a couple of weeks ago in the car park. I wondered how we could get involved.

"I'm aware that Ukrainian cinema is actually quite well regarded and does well at the Oscars. I thought if I could find a recent Oscar winning Ukrainian film, customers might come and see it if they know that all the ticket sales are going to go towards some sort of crisis relief charity.

"I set out to try and find one and then track down the distributor but before I had time to do it myself, the BFI (British Film Institute) and a national charity beat me to it.

"All the cinemas in the UK are doing it so we're thrilled to be part of it. I would just love it to sell out and people come, see the film, and all the ticket money is going to go to charity and that would be a dream come true."

Ms Budiashkina said: "I am very glad that Olga will be seen in the UK, and people will see the situation going on with Ukraine. Everyone involved with Olga worked very hard, and I put a part of myself into the film. I hope everyone will enjoy Olga."

At the moment, there are plans for only one screening of the film in Hucknall which will be at 8:20pm, however, if there is huge demand for tickets this will change.
