Two community events organised by a Hucknall campaign group, held last weekend, were well attended successes.

Hucknall Against Whyburn Farm Development (HAWFD) group held a dog show and a hog roast at The Horse and Groom pub in Linby on Saturday (9 July).

The group are opposing Ashfield District Council's decision to propose within their local plan that 3000 houses should be built on the greenbelt land at Whyburn Farm which is in the West Ward of Hucknall.

Last year, HAWFD launched their own Facebook page which now has nearly 4500 members. They regularly organise events to raise money for their fight fund which, if necessary, will be used to fund legal costs should they be needed.

In total, Saturday's events raised £570 for the cause.

Speaking to Hucknall Nub News, a spokesperson for HAWFD said: "We're pleased we didn't really have any expectations, the more we raised the better but it was also about bringing everyone together as well.

"We're really happy, it was an awareness event and a fundraising event. So it was to raise awareness for the campaign perhaps to people that didn't know what we're trying to achieve.

"No one could anticipate how hot it was but we made sure the dogs were safe with lots of shade we even had a little dog paddling pool. We made sure that there was someone solely dedicated to making sure all the water bowls were topped up and everything; it had a really nice feel about it.

"Councillor Phil Rostance provided the music (at the hog roast), he was really good, (there was a) really good mix of music, suitable for all ages."

Speaking about the development, the spokesperson added: "It doesn't just affect Hucknall it does affect other areas as well. What it has done is brought everyone together to a common cause, we're doing what we can to get it out there.

"We've got lots of events planned in the autumn as well, we want to make sure as many people know about it as well and that they're aware of what's being proposed in the town basically and how it might negatively affect people."
