A Hucknall care home is collecting donations to help people in war-torn Ukraine.

Harrier House Care Home on Hurricane Road in Hucknall is accepting donations until Saturday (5 March).

Russia invaded Ukraine last Thursday (24 February) and with the death toll mounting, cities beginning to fall under Russian control, and according to the United Nations, over one million citizens fleeing the country, the humanitarian crisis is growing.

Now staff at Harrier House are working with outdoor and sporting goods company Beasty Bikes to collect toiletries and dry food that can be sent across to help those in need.

Beasty Bikes has organised a delivery to the Moldova and Romania borders which will leave on Sunday. The donations collected in Hucknall will also be taken across in this delivery.

Speaking exclusively to Hucknall Nub News, Nichola Ince, who works at Harrier House, said: "At the end of the week it started coming on the news, and we're all messaging each other at work saying there's nothing you can ever do. Then Harriett one of our senior carers, she messaged me Saturday, and I was just thinking the same, she said why don't we collect or do something.

"Then her partner has a lot to do with a business who sell these electric luxury bikes, and they have a lot to do with Moldova and Ukraine. Because she's been speaking to them it's set her off and they found out there was a driver going over.

"Harriett said why don't us at Harrier between the staff, the residents and the families, collect as much as we can, and they're going to come and collect it on Saturday and the driver is driving all day Sunday.

"We put Sky News on and we're all saying it, we just sit here, and we can't do anything, there's nothing. And you look at these politicians and I don't feel like they're doing enough. And it's sickening. How would we feel if we were being bombed and no one's doing anything?

"That's what kills us all, is when you see the kids and they've got nothing. And they're walking for miles to get away from a nutter and they get to the other side, they get to Poland, and they've got just a bag."

Asked about the time of items they are collecting, Ms Ince added: "We just got told the simple sanitary products, toothbrushes, toothpaste, baby nappies, dry food. So far it has just been toiletries, and the residents can help with that.

"Even just a little bit, if we can don anything to help, at least we've done our bit."

The home is accepting donations until Saturday morning, anyone wishing to contribute can contact Harrier House via their Facebook page which can be found here.
