There was a pleasing turnout as local residents supported 'Hucknall Community Day' in the town centre earlier today (Saturday 21 May).

The annual event organised by Hucknall Rotary Club returned to Hucknall Marketplace for the first time in three years.

Following the inaugural edition in 2019, the event wasn't held in 2020 or 2021 due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The event offers opportunities to local groups to have a stall on the market to promote what they do and attract potential new members to join.

Today's event held in warm, sunny conditions saw 26 local groups represented including Torkard Ensemble, Rolls Royce Model Aeroplane Club, Nottingham Heritage Vehicles, Hucknall Water Polo, Hucknall Heritage Society and Hucknall Flower Arranging Group.

Speaking exclusively to Hucknall Nub News, event organiser Andrew Stone of the Rotary Club said of Hucknall Community Day: "It's to join all the community groups together, any charity, the idea is they can raise funds, they can advertise for members, they can tell Hucknall what is available in Hucknall because there are groups in Hucknall nobody knows about.

"Everybody I've talked to on the stalls has been very, very happy (with the turnout and engagement)."

On the Rotary Club, he added: "We are down in numbers, we could do with new blood to come and see what Hucknall Rotary is all about which is local, national, worldwide. It's more than raising just money it's helping people; it's using your vocation to help others."

There was live music and free cakes being given out by members of Hucknall Against Whyburn Farm Development (HAWFD) who were raising awareness of their cause against Ashfield District Council's current Local Plan which proposes building 3000 homes on greenbelt land in the town.

Plans are already in place to have the community event take place at a similar time next year.
