All three of Hucknall's Ashfield Independent Nottinghamshire County Councillors have been selected to lead the opposition on different committees.

Following the AGM of Nottinghamshire County Council, the three councillors, who are all members of the opposition Independent Alliance Group at County Hall, were appointed 'lead spokespeople' for their committees.

Councillor Dave Shaw will lead on Children and Young People issues, Councillor Lee Waters – Pensions and Councillor John Wilmott – Health.

Councillor Shaw has been promoted to be the lead Ashfield Independent Councillor on the newly formed Children and Young People Select Committee. Having worked in youth services for over 30 years, Councillor Shaw says he will use his position to campaign for more resources for Hucknall's schools and more youth facilities across the town.

Councillor Shaw, who represents Hucknall West said: "I am pleased to be leading the campaign to improve life chances for our young people. Over the last 6 years, Hucknall's schools have seen significant funding cuts under the Tories. I will continue to fight to deliver extra resources to Hucknall's schools and to invest more in youth services across our town."

Councillor Wilmott, who represents Hucknall North, will be the lead Independent Alliance Opposition councillor on the influential Health and Well Being Board.

He said: "I am pleased to be joining this increasingly influential committee and use it to help end the health crisis that exists in Hucknall. We have already ensured that Ashfield District Council put £1million into the pot for a new super health centre. I will be fighting to make sure the County Council more than match this."

Nottinghamshire's pension fund is valued at approximately £6.1 billion, with around 300 contributing employers and around 44,000 contributing members. Hucknall South Councillor Lee Waters has been confirmed as the spokesperson for the Independent Alliance.

He said: "Since joining the committee last year – I have been shocked at the number of scandalous and immoral investments. This includes companies involved in the extraction of fossil fuel, weapons and child trafficking. I will continue to raise these issues as I fight to clean up what is, in our view an organisation with an increasing number of dodgy investments."
