A Hucknall micropub has finished as runner-up in Nottingham CAMRA's (Campaign For Real Ale) "Pub of the Year 2022" competition.

Byron's Rest on Baker Street, which opened in 2017, was second out of ten establishments that were shortlisted in the urban section of the award.

Nominated pubs in the Nottingham area were judged on a number of criteria, which included beer quality, warmth of welcome and general mix of clientele amongst other considerations.

Speaking exclusively to Hucknall Nub News, owner of Byron's Rest, Richard Darrington said: "It's a massive achievement for us, we're ecstatic. We've worked hard. We're a community pub.

"I am shocked. It's an honour to come runners up, obviously we'll strive to do everything we can in future years to win it.

"It's all good because we've got the tram, train and a great bus service that can bring people to the town and we've now got a few venues that create a circuit."

"All the staff are on the same page, they're brilliant, all my girls and lads are superb. They're all into their real ales, they all enjoy it. And if they don't drink it, they put passion into it and they like to sell it."

This comes just a couple of weeks after The Beer Shack on Derbyshire Lane finished runner-up in Nottingham CAMRA's Cider Pub of the Year award.

The Horse & Jockey in Stapleford was the winner, with Poppy and Pint in Lady Bay, West Bridgford third.

The Old Green Dragon in Oxton won the village section but it was The Horse & Jockey that claimed overall honours and will go forward to the national finals.

Speaking to Hucknall Nub News, Nottingham CAMRA Branch Chairman Steve Westby said: "Byron's Rest is highly regarded not only for its choice of beers but its friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

"It shows the high standard of most micropubs. If you look back at the award, micropubs disproportionately have a higher number of winners than more conventional style pubs if you like. I think it's their nature, they tend to be smaller and friendlier and concentrate on quality beers or in some cases quality ciders. They're increasingly popular and their number has been increasing steadily over the past few years, and they're quite well spread across the branch area."
