Hucknall MP Mark Spencer has lost his cabinet role as Liz Truss named her top team last night (Tuesday 6 September).

The new Prime Minister officially took up the role yesterday after travelling to Balmoral to meet with the Queen and being invited to form a government.

This came a day after it was announced she had defeated former Chancellor Rishi Sunak to become the leader of the Conservative Party, succeeding Boris Johnson.

Last night Ms Truss set about naming her cabinet and unsurprisingly there was no room for Mr Spencer, who had openly supported Mr Sunak throughout the contest.

Penny Mordaunt, who came third in the recent leadership contest, will replace Mr Spencer as Leader of the House of Commons.

This will be the first time that the MP for Sherwood, the constituency which includes Hucknall, will not have a cabinet role for over three years, having been in a senior role throughout Boris Johnson's tenure as PM.

When approached for comment by Hucknall Nub News, Mr Spencer said: "One of the advantages of being elected Prime Minister is the ability to choose your own cabinet, and I am in no doubt that Liz Truss has chosen candidates from across the party who possess a multitude of talents.

"I am ready to support the Prime Minister in whatever capacity she requires me to, and encourage my Conservative colleagues to fall behind our new leader as she navigates us through these difficult times."
