Hucknall MP Mark Spencer has given his full support to Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Pressure is growing on the Prime Minister to resign after admitting to attending a drinks party at Downing Street during the lockdown in May 2020.
At that time, Government restrictions limited people to being allowed to meet just one other person from outside their household, provided it was in an outdoor public place and two-metre social distancing was maintained at all times.
However, it emerged earlier this week thanks to a report from ITV, that an email had invited around 100 people to the drinks gathering and that between 30 and 40 people had attended, including the Prime Minister.
Mr Johnson then apologised during Prime Minister's Questions yesterday (Wednesday 12 January) but despite this, faced calls to resign from opposition politicians including Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, as well as from members of his own party.
However, Mr Spencer, who as well as representing the constituency of Sherwood, is the Government Chief Whip, took to Twitter late last night to show his support for Mr Johnson.
He wrote: "PM continually delivers for the country."
He followed this sentence with a list of statements to support his argument, with a green tick next to each one.
He wrote: "Got Brexit done.
"World-beating vaccine roll-out.
"400,000 more jobs than pre-covid.
"Keeping schools open & children learning.
"Building back better for all.
"All thanks to the leadership of @BorisJohnson.
"100% behind him."
His tweet drew a mixed reaction from users on the social media platform.
One user, Andrew Briggs, replied: "As my MP why do you think it's ok to have a party during a period when your constituents were locked down and couldn't even see family members? disgusted (sic) at your support of a man who thought it was ok to break the rules he set."
Another user, Brian Bradley, replied: "Tell me, are there any depths of deceit you will refuse to tolerate?"
However, Richard Wearmouth, a Conservative County Councillor in Northumberland agreed with Mr Spencer's assessment and simply tweeted: "Well said."
Mr Spencer has served as MP for Sherwood since 2010 and during the last election enjoyed a healthy majority of over 16,000 as he held his seat.
