Nottinghamshire County Council is set to undergo transformational changes to the way it makes decisions and introduces policies.

The council has been operating a committee-led, decision-making system since 2012.

A decision was made in principle in September 2021 to move to a cabinet-style model - a move which received cross-party support at a meeting of Full Council on Thursday (31 March).

This is also the preferred model the government has set for councils who are seeking more powers and funds from central government. Chairman of Governance and Ethics Committee Councillor Phillip Owen said: "We're moving in line with the vast majority of councils to create [a] stronger and more accountable model of leadership. "Of course, we'll continue to be held accountable through scrutiny and oversight of decisions and, more importantly, to the people of Nottinghamshire. "Our Cabinet meetings will be broadcast live so the public can still get to see democracy in action. "Our next Annual General Meeting will announce the new system of governance and start delivering on the priorities set out in the Nottinghamshire Plan." The decision will be implemented with effect on Friday 13 May - the day after the council's annual general meeting.
