Poundland enjoyed a successful first day on Hucknall High Street yesterday (Thursday 1 December) as they 'smashed' their sales targets with hours to spare.

The chain now occupies the premises that was previously Fultons Foods on the high street, after the company purchased the Barnsley-based frozen food specialist in October 2020.

Fultons Foods closed last month and the transformation of the unit into a Poundland took just a couple of weeks.

Speaking exclusively to Hucknall Nub News, store manager Sarah Tomlinson said: "The response has been absolutely brilliant. We've had a lot of loyal old customers to Fultons still coming in. It's been brilliant, everyone loves it.

"I knew we'd smash it today and I think it'll be even better tomorrow; obviously the market's on."

All of the staff that worked at the store in its previous guise as Fultons Foods have been employed by Poundland and this continuity aids the cohesion of the operation of the store.

Ms Tomlinson added: "We've been together a long time, all of us here, some of them have got ten plus years working together, we're like a family."

One of the key aspects of the transformation has been the company's decision to continue selling frozen food alongside other traditional Poundland products. Ms Tomlinson believes that this decision will prove vital to the success of the store in the long run.

"I think if they haven't have put these in here, it would not have been as good, like I say we've got all the old customers, they needed the reassurance that we've still got all the frozen foods. You can't buy any frozen food (elsewhere) on the high street, so it's massively important."

The Hucknall store is open seven days a week from 8am until 6pm Monday-Saturday and 10am until 4pm on Sunday.
