A Hucknall resident who is taking part in the Nottingham memory walk to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Society at Wollaton Park today (19 September), will cut the ribbon at the start of the event alongside actress Vicky McClure.

David Smith, who moved to Hucknall shortly after completing a degree at The University of Nottingham, just under a decade ago, is participating in the walk in memory of his Grandad, John, who was diagnosed with dementia and passed away in March this year.

Mr Smith will also be walking for his Auntie, Susan, John's eldest daughter, who at the age of 61 has early onset dementia.

He will be walking with his wife, Amy, one-year-old daughter Annie, his Mum Jayne, and his brother Luke.

The family will be among around 1000 people tackling the six kilometre walk around the park and raising money to support the society.

Speaking exclusively to Hucknall Nub News, Mr Smith said: "My Grandad was my best friend. He was always trying to make people laugh and he was excellent at organising parties and gatherings.

"I think it's important to take part in the walk because I think a lot of people are aware of what the disease does but no-one can understand the impact of it until you experience it, so it is not only important to do the walk to try and raise awareness of the disease but also be part of the support network the society provides."

On being asked to cut the ribbon, he added: "I was shocked, surprised and honoured."
