Hucknall residents living on the same road as a primary school have expressed their frustration at the parking of parents when dropping off and collecting their children.

A number of people who live on High Leys Road are beyond frustrated with what they deem as inconsiderate actions of parents who drive their children to Holgate Primary and Nursery School.

Jaimie Harris is one such resident. He often returns home to find his drive blocked by the car of a parent who has then left their vehicle to collect their child from the school gates on foot.

He described the last two weeks before the Christmas holidays as 'shocking.'

It has become so difficult that he has taken to ringing his wife when he's on the way home from work to ask her to make sure nobody parks across their drive so he knows he can park his work van and immediately access equipment that he needs to unload.

Speaking exclusively to Hucknall Nub News he said: "It's every day. People do have to go in their cars that's not a problem but it's just being inconsiderate, that's what does me."

His neighbour Rob Fensom agreed. Speaking exclusively to Hucknall Nub News he said: "We've been on the street for about 15 years. The last year has been the worst we've had for traffic.

"What's happening is they're coming up, picking their little kiddies up from school and they literally live on the next street. Unbelievable but it's true. They'll deny it but I've actually seen it myself.

Mr Fensom says that enquiries have been made to Nottinghamshire County Council and local politicians about introducing permit parking to try to ease the congestion but that they've been left feeling "totally and utterly ignored."

He added: "The parents don't get it. You can stand there, tell them not to do it and then they do exactly the same thing. Even though they live on the next street, they're not interested."

However, when contacted for comment by Hucknall Nub News, the school made it clear they were aware of the issue and were doing everything they could to minimise the problem.

Nicola Davies, Executive Head Teacher of Holgate Primary School said: "As a school we run a daily Drop Off Zone where staff collect children from parents' cars as they briefly pull in at the zone within the school premises and then utilise our turn around system. This is so they don't have to park on the adjacent streets and many supportive parents use this successfully.

"We also send regular reminders out to parents to ask them to park thoughtfully and to consider our local residents. This term alone (September to Christmas) we have sent two Parentmail communications out to parents and have in addition contacted the parking enforcement team three times for support.

"The parking enforcement team have been in attendance in the last couple of weeks but apparently haven't issued any fines as no cars were parking on the yellow markings. It is something we constantly battle with and we are doing our very best to support our local residents as much as we are able."

There is also considerable concern about the road, which isn't particularly wide anyway, becoming inaccessible to emergency service vehicles due to double parking and general congestion that occurs around the start and end of the school day.

Greg Cox, East Midlands Ambulance Service's Divisional Director for Nottinghamshire said: "In an emergency situation, delays can put lives at risk. For that reason, we would urge all motorists to park considerately and never leave their vehicle in a position where it could prevent an ambulance, or other emergency vehicles on a 999 call getting through."

The frustration of the residents is abundantly clear and the situation leaves them finding themselves counting down the days to each school holiday.

Mr Fensom said: "We love holidays, we've got a normal road then!"
