Hucknall residents will need photo ID to vote in May's local elections
Hucknall voters are being reminded that they will need to take photo ID to the polling station with them when voting in this year's local elections.
As of Thursday 4 May, the date of the Ashfield District Council elections as well as a series of local elections up and down the country, voters in England will be required to show photo ID in order to be allowed to cast their vote.
Failure to do so will result in people being turned away.
From October 2023, this will also apply to UK General elections. Although the Prime Minister can call an election at any time during their term, it is widely expected, that current incumbent, Rishi Sunak will wait until next year to call one.
Accepted forms of photo ID include passports, driving licenses (including provisional) and blue badges.
Ruth Dennis, Director of Legal and Governance and Returning Officer at Ashfield District Council said: "For future elections residents will need to take photo ID with them to polling stations to be able to vote. Ashfield District Council will provide as much support as possible to ensure that every resident who wants to vote in elections on 4 May is able to do so as easily as possible. From now until the elections, the Council will be publicising the new voter ID requirements and how residents can get a Voter Authority Certificate if they don't have eligible photo ID. Residents can find out about eligible photo ID or apply online for their free Voter Authority Certificate using the government's online portal at www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate or they can apply by post."
