The Arc Cinema in Hucknall is holding a one-off screening of cult classic film Groundhog Day next month to raise money for the 'When you wish upon a Star' charity.

The event will be held on Groundhog Day itself (Thursday 2 February) and in the year of the film's 30th anniversary since its release.

Starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell the 1993 American fantasy comedy tells the story of a weatherman, played by Murray, who whilst covering the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, becomes stuck in a time loop and is forced to relive the same day repeatedly.

Two members of The Arc Cinema's head office in Ireland are running the London Marathon later this year to raise money for the children's charity 'When you wish upon a Star'. To aid their cause, four of the five UK branches of the cinema chain are running a special screening of Groundhog Day with all of the money raised going to the charity.

Tickets will cost £10 each and all ticketholders will receive a free regular popcorn to enjoy with the film.

Speaking to Hucknall Nub News, Mark Gallagher, the cinema's marketing manager said: "I was looking at what films are celebrating anniversaries this year, Groundhog Day jumped out. I'm a massive Bill Murray fan, love Groundhog Day and it just dawned on me, I remember that Groundhog Day is in February. Lo and behold it's on the 2nd of February which is in a few weeks' time.

"It's a Thursday night, and I like Thursday nights because it doesn't interfere with your weekend and it's not quite as depressing as a Monday or Tuesday, Thursday night is a good night to put an event on.

"It sort of wrote itself, the alarm clock in Groundhog Day which goes off over and over again to Sonny and Cher goes off at 6 o'clock so I made sure that we set our screenings to 6pm, obviously it's 6am in the film, but 6 o'clock on Groundhog Day.

"The film itself is celebrating 30 years, it's a great film. When was the last time you saw it at the cinema? Probably never maybe for some people. So not only can you come and watch a classic film on the big screen on actual Groundhog Day but 100 per cent of your ticket money is going to charity and we're going to throw in a free regular popcorn, so it's win, win, win.

"We're just urging people to come out and watch a classic comedy on the big screen on actual Groundhog Day and you're supporting a charity and two of our head office team. They're a lovely bunch at head office, I couldn't work for a better company and I just wanted to do something really special. Hopefully the UK arm of the company, the customers can show the Arc Cinema how much they appreciate what they do."
