A well-known local company specialising in mobility related products has opened a shop in Hucknall.

Mike's Mobility, which was founded in 2009 by Mike Meehan, already has two stores in Bulwell but has now opened a third branch on Hucknall High Street.

The Hucknall shop is being headed up by Mike's daughter Kirsty and her partner Kieran Wilson.

The pair, who have five children between them, made the decision to change careers and help expand Mike's business to benefit family life.

Kirsty, who was a children's party entertainer, and Kieran who is a registered nurse, found themselves working an enormous amount of unsociable hours and weekends which limited the amount of time they could spend together as a family.

"It's a much better lifestyle for us and the kids," said Mr Wilson, speaking exclusively to Hucknall Nub News.

"Mike started because he retired and started working for another company who weren't 100% honest with their customers and he didn't like that so he thought I can do this myself but better."

Kirsty speaks highly of her father, and it is obvious she holds the same values and wants to continue the success of his business in Hucknall.

"He was a landlord, he worked in a mobility store and he saw a lot of his old customers. He's just a people's person, he's very caring. What's lovely about my Dad is he 100% puts this business even above us."

It is immediately clear that this is more than a business to the duo, and that it is centred around customer care and wellbeing.

Kieran acknowledges that just like in nursing "Care never stops," and this transcends the ethos of the company.

The shop, as well as being in a prime location in the centre of Hucknall, is surprisingly spacious and stocks a variety of products including reconditioned scooters, new scooters, Rollators, wheelchairs, shower products, commodes and rise and recline furniture such as chairs and beds.

"We often say to customers if you can't see it in the shop and it's something that you've got in your head, chances are we can get hold of it.

"We try and help where we can and if we can't help, we'll point you in the right direction.

"It's just building up an idea of what people need and what are more popular so we can get them and we can provide them to customers a lot quicker.

"Because people that are frail or elderly it's sometimes difficult for them to wait because it affects their life, if we can get that to them a lot quicker it means they can get on with their life a lot quicker and we can just make things easier for them. We're hopeful that we can help everybody that we need to," adds Kieran.

As well as sales, Mike's Mobility also repairs and services scooters, even if they weren't purchased from their store. Kieran has a mechanical background which means he can fix minor faults in store while electrical faults and diagnostics are dealt with by an engineer though these take slightly longer. The store also offers free battery testing which can be done immediately, without the owner of the scooter needing to leave it in store for a period of time.

"We found as well that a lot of people don't realise that once you've bought a scooter it needs servicing because there are brakes on there and motors and everything, a lot of people don't realise that, so that's another thing that we offer," said Kieran.
