Members of Nottinghamshire's emergency services paused this morning to reflect upon colleagues who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
At their joint headquarters, near Hucknall, Nottinghamshire Police and Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service held a two-minute silence to remember members of the emergency services who have died whilst on duty.
Emergency Services Day, also known as 999 Day, is a national event marked across the UK annually on the ninth day of the ninth month. This year 999 Day was postponed as it was due to take place the day after Her Majesty The Queen passed away.
However, the staff wanted to make sure that there was still an opportunity in 2022 to remember their colleagues so the decision was made to hold the day a month later than usual.
In attendance were Nottinghamshire's Chief Constable Craig Guildford, Chief Fire Officer Craig Parkin and Assistant Chief Fire Officer Mick Sharman.
Chief Constable Craig Guildford said: "At 9am on 19 October there was a two-minute silence to remember all our colleagues who have died as a result of their service in the emergency services.
"Staff and officers from Nottinghamshire Police and Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service were encouraged to gather at the memorial garden at headquarters to reflect.
"This day of recognition is an opportunity to honour those who have tragically lost their lives while on duty.
"On behalf of Nottinghamshire Police, I would like to thank everyone for the hard work that you all continue to do to keep our communities safe."
Chief Fire Officer Craig Parkin said: "This is an important day for us to remember those that have lost their lives while trying to protect or help others.
"It takes extraordinary people to serve and protect communities, who place themselves in dangerous situations where many people could not go.
"I am fortunate enough to see these people do incredible things for others every day, and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue remains exceptionally proud to stand alongside our emergency service colleagues and the NHS."
The day also promotes the work of emergency services, encourages responsible use of 999 services, educates the public about basic lifesaving skills, and promotes the many career and volunteering opportunities available.
Supporters of Emergency Services Day include HM The King, HRH The Prince of Wales, the Prime Minister, and the National Fire Chiefs' Council.
