A Hucknall band have found mainstream success in Belgium after one of their songs was played on a national radio station there yesterday (Wednesday 15 June).

Cucamaras, a four-piece indie rock band, had their hit 'Safe Bet' played on RTBF's The Jam Show.

The band, made up of co-frontmen and guitarists Josh Hart and Olly Bowley, drummer Joe Newton, and bassist Dan McGrath formed in 2019. Three of the members hail from Hucknall with Josh and Olly having known each other since starting Hucknall National Primary School together at the age of four.

Speaking exclusively to Hucknall Nub News about how the Belgian radio airplay happened, Mr Hart said: "At the start of the year we signed for a label who are in Brussels so they've given us quite a lot of traction over in Europe. We're going over to play Belgium a couple of times this year and we're playing in the Netherlands. They're flogging vinyls and stuff for us out there.

"Really randomly we got in the Dutch charts, we were number one in the Dutch alternative charts; it came as quite a shock, so did the one last night though to be fair because we got played on it was basically like their Radio One, so it's a bit mental that we got played."

Cucamaras also hit British airwaves recently with two plays by BBC Radio One DJ Gemma Bradley in recent weeks.

However, despite the band's pleasure at their achievements, they are not allowing themselves to get carried away.

"It's weird because as a group of lads every time we achieve something we always want the next thing we're really driven to try and do this. We kind of enjoy it for about five minutes and then we're like right move on. We try not to get to wrapped up in it because the moment you get wrapped up in it you stop looking forward I think."

They recently played Rock City during the Dot to Dot Festival and will return to Nottingham for a gig later this year when they play Rescue Rooms in the city centre in November.
