Ashfield District Council's BIG Spring Clean started with a bang in Hucknall after rubbish the weighing the equivalent of nine hippopotamuses was collected in the Flying Skips on Saturday (4 March).

Residents turned up to dispose of their old furniture, pet beds, broken toys, and excess waste in the 'Flying Skips', bin lorries which were parked in various locations across the town for much of the day.

In total, a whopping 26.44 tonnes of rubbish was collected.

Councillor Nick Parvin, who represents Hucknall Central on Ashfield District Council, said: "It was fantastic to see so many residents clearing out their homes and disposing of their waste with our Flying Skips.

"The Council is committed to making Hucknall, and the whole District, a cleaner and safer place and the BIG Ashfield Spring Clean is just one of the ways it is achieving those aims."

This week (commencing Monday 6 March), residents in Hucknall and the Rural areas such as Selston, Jacksdale, and Underwood, will be able to leave an extra bag of household waste with their bin on their usual collection day.

Residents can also join in with the community litter picks taking place across Hucknall at Kenbrook Road, Titchfield Park, and Lime Tree Road.

Later this year, there will be free bulky waste collections – one collection of up to three items per household - with Hucknall's collections starting again in May.
