Thousands of poppies made and donated by residents of Hucknall have been arranged on Hucknall market on the railings outside of St Mary Magdalene Church to form a 'remembrance wall.'

This is now an annual occurrence in the town, having been started five years ago by Jan Lees.

Speaking to Hucknall Nub News, she said: "All these poppies have been knitted by the community, every single one of them is from the community.

"I put a shout out and they get dropped off with me or at Tesco. I pick them up and we make things from them and stick them up. And every year I put a shout out for more and it gets bigger and bigger.

"I just think poppy day is so important and it just sort of touches your heart and your emotions. I had an idea to paint the town red. The first time, a whole group of us got together and made bunting and gave it to all the shops and asked them to decorate all the windows."

The display will be added to up until Remembrance Sunday (14 November) and then will remain until the following Friday (19 November).

Of the support within the community, Ms Lees added: "It isn't a church initiative but the church has said we can use the railings. I've spoken to Helen (Chantry), the new vicar, who's said we can do all sort of things, so I've got lots of plans for the future as well. It's the community working together."
