Hucknall MP Mark Spencer continued his vehement support of Prime Minister Boris Johnson yesterday (Tuesday 18 January), labelling him a 'hero.'

Pressure is mounting on the Prime Minister following anger at the revelation that a number of parties were held at No 10 whilst lockdown restrictions were in place across the country.

Mr Spencer, who as well as representing Sherwood, is also the Government Chief Whip, reiterated his stance as he called out to assembled press as he left Downing Street yesterday.

He said: "The Prime Minister's getting us out of the pandemic faster than any other country. The man's a hero."

Last week Mr Spencer, who has been an MP since 2010, tweeted his support of the Prime Minister, stating he was: "100% behind him."

However, this stance is not shared by all Conservative MPs, some of whom have now submitted letters of no confidence in the Prime Minister. If the number of letters reaches 54, this would trigger a leadership vote.

An investigation into alleged Covid rule breaking in Downing Street and across the government is currently being carried out by Sue Gray, a senior civil servant. The report detailing her findings is expected to be published in the near future.

One school of thought is that some MPs may wait to make their judgement on whether or not to call for the Prime Minister to resign, until after the report has been published.

Mr Johnson will address the House of Commons today at noon when he takes part in Prime Minister's Questions.
