Hucknall comes to a standstill to mark Remembrance Sunday

Hucknall residents gathered at Titchfield Park yesterday (Sunday 14 November) to remember those who died in the two world wars and other subsequent military conflicts.

The ceremony took place on a smaller scale than previous years with a parade beginning at Titchfield Park Cafe in which local cadet groups and a band marched down to the cenotaph at the bottom of the park.

When the clock struck 11, a two-minute silence was observed after the last post. Poppy wreaths were then laid at the cenotaph with crowds later hearing hymns and prayers led by The Reverend Helen Chantry.

Warrant Officer Rob Carr of the 1803 Hucknall Squadron said: "The act of remembrance and commemoration is very important and it's also very important for the cadets to take part in community events like this.

"Obviously there has been some disappointment because everyone couldn't attend or take part, but you've got to work with what you're given. It's good that it's been able to happen this year, all the troops were raring to do it and it's nice to be back, even if it's in a restricted format. I think it's gone very well."

The smaller scale event follows disputes regarding road closures between the Royal British Legion and Ashfield District Council which meant that the usual parade through the town centre could not go ahead.

Reverend Chantry, Vicar of St Mary Magdalene and St John the Evangelist churches in Hucknall, said: "Events like this are very important for the community, they're bringing people together to remember something very important in our past that still has ongoing influence on our lives today.

"It was lovely to see a good number of people who have come today. Obviously, we weren't able to do the march through the town, which is a pity in many ways, but need to do what we can do to keep each other safe, whilst still remembering those we lost in war."

Treasurer of the Royal British Legion Hucknall Branch, Barrie Straw said: "Looking at the amount that's out, I think we're nearly back up to full numbers. Hopefully next year, we can go back up to the full parade we usually do. But, compared to last year, it's definitely a lot better."
