Nottingham's Public Health director is calling on visitors to one of the city's biggest events to take a Covid test before coming out.

There will also be a mobile testing unit near Old Market Square for those wishing to take a test before exploring the two-day event.

Nottingham's Light Night will see more than 50 light-based installations and attractions across the city on Friday, February 4 and Saturday, February 5.

Attractions will based across the city including at St Mary's in the Lace Market, Lister Gate, Hockley, Sneinton Market, a fire display at Nottingham Castle, as well as a wall of sound, light and projection in Old Market Square.

There will also be live music.

The event is organised by Nottingham City Council and sponsored by Nottingham Business Improvement District (BID).

The asymptomatic testing team will have a mobile unit at Light Night, both days between 10am until 9.30pm. The unit will be situated on Smithy Row.

Lucy Hubber, Public Health director for Nottingham, said at a media briefing on Friday, February 4: "We are still seeing very high case rates in the city of 812 per 100,000 people but they are steadying off from the increases we saw recently.

"Nottingham city are seeing relatively lower rates than the England rate but that does not mean to say we are in a stronger position.

"There is still a lot of people picking up Covid and potentially passing it onto people who are vulnerable.

"Wearing face coverings in indoor or crowded settings remains really important. The more of us who wear face coverings in those environments, the better protection we offer to each other.

"It's really important to test yourself regularly, particularly if you are going to an event. If you are coming to Light Night this weekend get tested before and we have testing on site at Smithy Row on both of those evenings."

Cllr David Mellen (Lab), leader of Nottingham City Council said: "I'm delighted that Light Night, after last year's cancellation, is once again able to open up the city and offer some fun and some warmth on two wintry evenings. It is a great free event, especially for families with young children. I'm looking forward to seeing our proud Rebel City out in force."

The best way to plan the evening is to download the app which has the most up to date activity information.

There is a free download for either Apple or Android phones. The app lists activities by day and time but you can also filter by categories. An interactive map will also point people in the direction of activities and installations.
