Firefighters have seemingly brought a blaze under control at the industrial estate on Wigwam Lane as smoke began to ease.

It is believed that tyres caught fire and caused the blaze which could be seen from across the town.

Local resident Michael Shipley was at Hucknall Golf Club on Wigwam Lane enjoying his Sunday lunch, as is his weekly tradition, when the incident happened.

Speaking exclusively to Hucknall Nub News he said: "All you could hear were explosions going off.

"There were people having a look because you could see it through the windows outside and it just sounded like someone slamming doors at first but then you realised what was going off. Near the end people were a bit frightened.

"Because the golf club's right next to where it is you could see the black dense smoke going through the trees."

There aren't believed to have been any casualties but fire crews are expected to be on the scene for a few hours yet.

Smoke was first seen at just after 2pm this afternoon (Sunday 14 November).

Several explosions have also been heard but there hasn't been any confirmation as to the cause.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We are currently in attendance at a fire on Wigwam Lane, Hucknall. The fire is causing large quantities of smoke and we advise local residents to keep their doors and windows closed.

"Crews from Hucknall, Stockhill, Arnold, Ilkeston, Newark, Ashfield, Blidworth along with command support from Mansfield, a water carrier from Clay Cross and welfare unit from Belper have all been mobilised to the incident on Wigwam Ln Hucknall."

Crews from Tuxford, Collingham and Edwinstowe also arrived at the scene to help extinguish the fire to take the total number of firefighters at the incident to approximately 70.

Police have confirmed that local road closures are in place whilst the incident is dealt with.

Councillor Dave Shaw said: "The fire service and police are on site and I'll like to assure residents that they not in any danger.

"There have been several huge explosions which has been really intense.

"I've been assisting directing traffic away from the scene and I'd ask residents to avoid the area until the situation is under control. Ashfield District Council have despatched their community protection team to assist the emergency services and I would ask residents not to panic."
