A Toucan Crossing will be installed in Hucknall to provide a safer crossing point for pedestrians and cyclists on one of the busiest roads in the town.

The crossing will be on Watnall Road, to the east of its junction with the A611 Hucknall Bypass. It will incorporate a controlled area indicated by zig-zag markings along the approaches to the crossing within which parking and loading by vehicles will be prohibited at all times. A 'toucan' crossing is a type of pedestrian crossing that also allows bicycles to be ridden across. Since "two can" cross together.

The improvement comes following pressure from Hucknall Councillor Dave Shaw, after residents got in touch with him, and other members of the Ashfield Independents, to complain about the dangerous conditions on the road.

Councillor Shaw said: "I am pleased that the County Council have committed to these works after a campaign led by local residents and ourselves. Pedestrians and cyclists told me that the road was an accident waiting to happen. People explained that crossing Watnall Road felt like putting your life in someone else's hands. Your local Ashfield Independent councillors and I are committed to making our roads safer for everyone."

Councillor Shaw has also revealed other road safety progress he has been making in Hucknall. The County Council have agreed to carry out speed surveys on Babbacombe Way, Christchurch Road, Common Lane, Polperro Way, Nabbs Lane and Salterford Road.

He added: "Working with local residents in Hucknall West, I have asked for surveys to be done to look at some of most dangerous roads. Hopefully, the results of the speed surveys will lead to more traffic calming to protect residents. I am also continuing to press Sainsbury's Local with problems caused by huge articulated lorries unloading at the store. Residents like John Evans from Ruffs Drive deal with the nightmare situation multiple times on a daily basis. I would ask residents to get in touch with me if they have any road safety concerns."

Councillor Shaw can be contacted on 07592805865 or via email: [email protected].
