Hucknall's Titchfield Park celebratory centenary event well attended despite poor weather
By Tom Surgay 19th Jun 2022
Hucknall residents braved the drizzly weather yesterday (Saturday 18 June) to turn out in their droves for Titchfield Park's centenary celebrations.
The free fun day organised by Ashfield District Council ran from 1pm until 6pm and featured live music from Ollie Hayes, the Torkard Ensemble Choir, The Jury Dogs and The Spitfires.
The event also had small fun fair rides; giant garden games; a range of stalls operated by local businesses and community organisations; food stalls and a taster session from Titchfield Park Bowls Club.
However, the weather conditions were in complete contrast to Friday which had seen the hottest day of the year so far with temperatures reaching 30 degrees in Hucknall. Instead, Saturday was a much cooler day with rain showers throughout but it didn't dampen the spirits of the people at the event and there was still a celebratory feeling in the air.
The park, which was created when the Duke of Portland gave 11 acres of land, to the town of Hucknall, to mark the 21st birthday of his son, The Marquis of Titchfield, before being expanded and developed by the Hucknall Miners Welfare Committee, was officially opened in July 1922.
As this was 100 years ago Ashfield District Council were determined to do something to mark the park's contribution to Hucknall life.
Speaking exclusively to Hucknall Nub News, Councillor John Wilmott, who represents Hucknall North for the Ashfield Independents said of the event: "Unfortunately the weather has hit us hard but there's still a few hundred people here and it's built up as the time has gone on. But even so Hucknall people have come out, they're using all the facilities they're looking at all the stalls: they've done some reasonable business. All in all, disappointing because of the rain but it's still been a lovely event which people have supported.
When asked about Titchfield Park, he said: "Well it's a wonderful place. It's now a hundred years since it first opened. It's always been well patronised.
"This is free for the Hucknall people to come in and enjoy themselves, and the facilities as well they use for nothing, that's the advantage of having Hucknall Titchfield Park."
