Huge turnout for Hucknall Christmas lights switch on event
An estimated 6000 people turned out for Hucknall's Christmas lights switch on last night (Wednesday 30 November).
The seasonal event, which returned last year after its Covid related postponement in 2020, was busy from start to finish.
There was a fun filled evening of entertainment on the main stage with several performances from local schools and community groups including Holgate Primary School, Flying High Academy Choir, Believe Academy and Torkard Ensemble.
The lights were then switched on at 7pm by Chairman of Ashfield District Council, Councillor David Walters.
As well as the outdoor entertainment two of the town's churches, St Mary's and Central Methodist, opened their doors to serve refreshments. The former also hosted the opening of the annual tree festival whilst the latter invited Torkard to perform an encore.
There was also a thriving Christmas market held in the John Godber Centre who also served hot, cold and alcoholic refreshments.
Councillor John Wilmott, who represents Hucknall North on both Ashfield District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council, was extremely impressed with how well the event had gone and the number of people who had supported it.
Speaking exclusively to Hucknall Nub News, as the event was nearing its conclusion, he said: "It's been a gigantic success with the amount of stalls, the most there's ever been. The amount of people, I've never seen people enjoying themselves so much (at the event) as they have this evening.
"It's been a sensational event; I'd like to thank the rotary club for all their help."
The market was better lit than last year and there were funfair rides which last year were advertised but never materialised.
This led to an even bigger turnout than last year and a very positive, festive feel to the whole evening.
