Passenger figures at Hucknall Railway Station are improving but still lagging behind pre-pandemic levels.

This is according to latest figures from the Office of Rail and Road's (ORR) estimates of station usage statistics for the year April 2021 to March 2022. They show that train travel is up significantly at Hucknall Railway Station compared to the previous year.

Last year, there were an estimated 83,164 visits to the station, a number which includes people entering and exiting the station. This works out at close to 1600 visits a week and compares favourably to the same period in 2020/2021 where there were 34,668 uses of the station.

It is a rise of 140% although the previous year was severely impacted by successive Covid lockdowns. The figures do not include tram or bus travel.

However, the number is still below pre-pandemic levels where 198,694 people used the station between April 2019 to March 2020.

Ashfield Independent Councillors are hoping that if Hucknall's Levelling Up Fund bid is successful – more and more people will use the station.

They have welcomed the figures as "…a move in the right direction."

Councillor Nick Parvin, the newly elected councillor for Hucknall Central said: "As a public transport user, I am delighted that train travel is rising at our Railway Station after the pandemic. Commuter habits have changed – with more people working from home but these figures are encouraging and a step in the right direction. We are committed to improving services at our Railway Station."

Councillor Lee Waters said: "We are expecting a decision on our Levelling Up Fund bid for Hucknall at the end of the month. Improving facilities at our Railway Station is a major part of our bid. It is good news that more people are using our train station. If we can improve facilities at our transport interchange with a café, waiting room and toilet facilities – I am confident that even more people will leave their cars at home and use Hucknall Train Station – both ways. Experience shows that a thriving public transport system brings prosperity to towns like Hucknall."
