There has been a largely supportive response to the decision by both The National Academy and Hucknall Sixth Form Centre to close today (Friday 10 March) due to snow.

Persistent but steady snowfall throughout yesterday (Thursday 9 March) followed by heavier snow overnight and into the morning led to both education providers opting not to open their doors to staff and pupils.

The secondary school, which is based on Annesley Road, issued the following statement on social media: "National Church of England Academy Closure: Due to snow fall overnight, site safety, travel safety and the snow forecast for this morning, the academy will be closed today."

Whilst the Sixth Form Centre published the following communication on its social media channels: "Due to weather conditions and a health and safety review the school will be closed to all students today - Friday 10th March. Students should access remote learning via the Teams platform."

As the forecast predicted, the snow subsided by lunchtime and was replaced with sunny skies for much of the afternoon which quite quickly melted much of the snow.

This could have prompted fierce criticism from residents but when Hucknall Nub News canvassed opinion from parents and carers on the issue through social media, the response was largely positive, backing the decision to close. This was despite the fact that the other secondary school in the town, Holgate, on Hillcrest Drive, opted to open.

Sarah O'Reilly said: "The decision was made on the situation at the time with them considering staff, pupils and parents. I personally think it was a good decision I had snow days when I was a child and loved them."

Sarah Beeston agreed, saying: "It might be nice and sunny now but the decision had to be made early cause [sic] people travelling, safety first for parents, staff & pupils."

Jenny Sladden said: "Parent of a young person at HSFC - The decision was made when road conditions were quite bad. I respect their decision, it was made in the best interests of staff and students."

Emma Fairweather added: "Yes it can be inconvenient but so can many things in life. We had snow days as kids, never hurt us. Maybe if the country as a whole was better at dealing with the weather the schools wouldn't have to close. Let the kids make snow memories."

And, finally Natasha Green said: "We don't get snow very often, I think let kids enjoy a day of sledging and having fun in the snow."
