Hucknall Cricket Club beat Notts and Arnold by a single run in remarkable game to remain fifth in the table
Hucknall Cricket Club beat Notts and Arnold Amateur by one run in a remarkable Nottinghamshire Premier League game last Saturday (23 July).
Notts and Arnold won the toss and elected to field. They then impressively bowled out the home side for just 213.
Captain Sam Johnson (74) top scored with Nolan Benson (37) the only other Hucknall player to break 25 as they struggled to find their usual fluidity with the bat.
Sam Kaye (4-34) and Yash Samra (3-42) starred with the ball.
The visitors' response got off to a terrible start as Hucknall reduced them to 32-4.
However, an 84 run fifth wicket partnership and a 71 run eighth wicket partnership gave them hope mainly thanks to Dilhan Cooray's knock of 76.
Hucknall managed to bowl well with Waseem Fazal (3-28) the pick of the bowlers.
Needing 16 runs from the last two overs, Sam King bowled a tight penultimate over giving away just four runs. Connor Ramm bowled the final over and despite conceding a boundary off the first delivery, he did enough to stop Notts and Arnold successfully chasing their target and ending the 50 overs a run short, on 212-8.
Speaking to Hucknall Nub News, Johnson said of his team's performance: "To be honest, I thought we were pretty poor on the day. We did enough to win the game which is a good sign because we didn't play great but if we want to get to where we want to get to we've got to play better than that especially with a really strong side out.
"Looking back, I was really happy with how I played because it wasn't the easiest of wickets early. I then decided to try and kick on a bit and hit a ball in a gap that I just mis-executed and that can happen.
"I think it takes a bit of time sometimes to acknowledge your own performance when you're disappointed with the team's performance.
"I'm thrilled with the bowlers; they deserve a lot of the credit for the victory to be honest. Harry Finch and Waseem up top were brilliant, Mat Roberts bowled a really good spell, he's bowled fantastically well this year maybe without the wicket reward he deserves; he's been a revelation really."
Of the final two overs, he added: "I back him (Sam King), he's a really skilful lad, he loves the big occasion, thrives on it and I think that's half the battle in those kind of situations. Connor Ramm's the same, I trust him implicitly at the death."
Hucknall currently sit fifth in the table with six games remaining.
