A woman from Hucknall, whose son was diagnosed with testicular cancer at the age of six, is holding a charity cake sale later this month to raise money for and awareness of childhood cancer.
Nicola Barksby is organising the fundraiser to coincide with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month which runs throughout September. It is also being held in honour of her son Jake, who is now in remission, after being diagnosed with Paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare type of soft tissue tumour, two years ago.
Speaking exclusively to Hucknall Nub News, Mrs Barksby said: "We were just bathing him one night, he noticed that his left testicle was bigger than his right testicle, and after seeing a GP who urgently sent us to the hospital, they found a 5cm tumour in his testicle. He was basically rushed to theatre; he had the tumour removed and he had the testicle removed as well and then he started on a 22-week course of chemotherapy treatment. He's now in remission, which is great, he's doing really well."
The cake sale will be held on Saturday 18 September between 12 and 4 at St Peter & St Paul's Church Hall on Ruffs Estate in Hucknall.
"There's going to be lots of cakes for sale, lots of treats for sale, there'll be light refreshments, tea coffee, juices. We're going to do a tombola as well and I'll have the gold ribbon pin badges there as well for people to purchase if they want to. All the funds that are made from that I'll split it so half of it will go to Children with Cancer and Leukaemia UK and the other half will go towards spending on whatever the ward (where Jake was treated) wants at the time."
In the last two years Mrs Barksby and her friends and family have raised over £8000, some of which has been used to buy items such as toys and televisions for Ward E39 at the Queen's Medical Centre where Jake was treated.
Mrs Barksby continued: "It's not the first time, we've fundraised ever since Jake was diagnosed. I found trying to deal with things in my own way, I've put myself into fundraising as well to try and keep my mind active as well as looking after Jake at the same time, so we've always done something to help raise money for the hospital. We've always done something to help raise money for them and September is known it is childhood cancer awareness month so every year in September I like to do my bit to help raise money for children with cancer and leukaemia and for the ward as well."
