Kieran Knight's late goal saw Hucknall Town snatch all three points against Clipstone at The Lido Ground last night (Tuesday 23 August) to climb up to third in the Uhlsport United Counties First Division.
Before the match Hucknall were heavily fancied to run out comfortable victors over their hosts whose slow start to the season meant they began the evening outside of the relegation zone only on goal difference.
The Yellows started well and two goals in the space of two first half minutes, meant they were 2-0 up after 20 minutes, much in keeping with many pre-match predictions.
Aaron Short opened the scoring, turning the ball home from a corner before Craig Westcarr doubled Town's advantage with a header.
However, Clipstone came roaring back in the second half and a goal from Chadd Wootton just after the hour mark gave the hosts hope they could get something out of the game.
Then, with 11 minutes remaining William Heather levelled things up, as not for the first time this season, Hucknall surrendered a two goal advantage.
With the game seemingly heading for a draw, Knight provided the crucial intervention two minutes from the end to send the away fans home happy and keep the hosts mired in the early season relegation scrap.
Hucknall now turn their attention to the FA Vase on Saturday (27 August) as they travel to The Stag Ground to face Kimberley Miners Welfare in the First Qualifying Round.
