Westcarr scores late winner against struggling Grantham to boost Hucknall Town's playoff bid
Hucknall Town left it extremely late once again on Saturday (18 March), to snatch a late win over struggling Grantham Town.
Craig Westcarr headed home an excellent Joe Ashurst corner in the dying embers of the game to ensure Hucknall left The South Kesteven Stadium with all three points.
Many had expected a one-sided affair with Grantham mired in the relegation zone having won just four league games so far this season, and Hucknall flying high in the play-off places.
Early on it seemed as if these predictions would be proved correct with the visitors making a strong start to the game and creating a couple of decent opportunities before Niall Towle nodded the ball into the net to give Hucknall the lead. Aaron Lamb found Westcarr who crossed the ball into Towle and he provided the required finish. It was his second goal in as many games since signing for the club last week.
The Yellows continued to attack with Aaron Short going close to doubling their lead. However, with just under half an hour gone, Hucknall found themselves unexpectedly pegged back as Oliver Skinner netted for the hosts.
Joe Ashurst restored Hucknall's lead before halftime, with a powerful strike that the goalkeeper could do nothing about. This goal separated the teams at halftime.
It wasn't a straightforward second half though as Grantham found a second equaliser. Harry Gibbons dispatched a penalty kick with just over an hour gone, to set up a nervy finish.
As time ticked on Hucknall continued to press for a winner with Lamb going close. And just as the game seemed destined to end in a draw, Westcarr popped up with the crucial intervention to keep them third in the Uhlsports United Counties Division One table.
Hucknall are back in action on Saturday (25 March) when they host Holwell Sports at The RM Stadium.
